Historical tour of Edinburgh

The Real Mary King's Close in Edinburgh is a fascinating and deeply embedded in the history of the Scottish capital. It is a historical underground labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys that lie hidden beneath the modern buildings of the city. The streets, once a vibrant part of Edinburgh's Old Town, now offer a unique insight into the lives of people in the 17th century and the city's history.

Underground alleys in Edinburgh

The name "Mary King's Close" comes from one of the most well-known residents, a wealthy merchant named Mary King, who lived in this part of the city in the 17th century. The streets of Mary King's Close were once bustling, crowded, and partly impoverished residential areas used by both the wealthy upper class and the poorer population. These narrow alleys were home to families, merchants, craftsmen, as well as sick or impoverished individuals. Life in the "Closes," as these alleys were called, was characterized by cramped conditions, poverty, and a close-knit community. The narrow streets and crowded conditions in the buildings contributed to the development of issues such as poor hygiene and diseases.

Ghost stories from Edinburgh's past

The Real Mary King's Close showcases the life of this time in a unique way. Today, the streets and buildings that were once part of everyday life have been restored and made accessible to the public. Visitors can walk through the historic streets and get a glimpse into life in one of the poorest areas of Edinburgh. The underground alleys are preserved in their original state and provide an impressive sense of the past. The site is both a historical landmark and a living museum that helps visitors immerse themselves in history.

Life in 17th century Edinburgh

An essential part of the experience is the historical context that brings the atmosphere and stories of the streets to life. Visitors learn about the daily challenges of the people who lived in the Closes, as well as the dramatic events that shaped the region. For example, the outbreak of the plague in 1645 had devastating effects on the population of Edinburgh, and many of these stories are closely connected to The Real Mary King's Close. The site conveys a dark, but also fascinating, picture of the social and health challenges of the time.

Tour through Mary King's Close

In addition to the historical aspects, The Real Mary King's Close is also surrounded by mystical and ghostly stories. The site is known for being one of the spookiest destinations in Edinburgh. Numerous ghost stories and anecdotes about supernatural phenomena and eerie events are associated with this historical site, adding to its mystical aura. During the tours, visitors learn more about the rumors and legends surrounding old Edinburgh and gain a deeper insight into the dark side of the city's history.

Tours of The Real Mary King's Close are not only informative, but also interactive and atmospheric. Guides in historical costumes accompany visitors through the alleys and vividly narrate the various aspects of life in the 17th century. They tell both historical facts and fictional stories that make the experience more exciting for visitors. These tours provide a complete picture of the site's history by combining the past with anecdotes, humorous tales, and tragic fates.

Our tour guide Erin was very nice and knowledgeable of the history. We really enjoyed the information. A lot of stairs. But very nice tour.

This is a must visit for anyone coming to Edinburgh. The whole experience is just amazing being to step back in time into the streets below Edinburgh. It was unlike anything I've ever seen or likely to ever see, it was surreal. The tour was very well organised and very informative, even if it was the tour guide was 'playing the role' of a former resident - not to our taste but still very good. You definitely need to buy tickets in advance for this

Esperienza carina ma forse eccessivamente cara. Suggeriamo l’uso dell’audio guida anche se pensate di sapere bene l’inglese

Visited last week during a city trip, going off a recommendation of a local, and what a recommendation that was. Took the tour with Alexander, who was a lovely host and seemed to enjoy what he does. Even though it was sometimes difficult to convey what he tried to tell us (language barrier for some of the other people on tour), he never lost his smile. Tour itself was very fun, it's fascinating to see the older structures of the city. The tickets were a tad expensive, though I thought it was worth it.

Very interesting place. If you are in Edinburgh it is definitely worth it! The guide was funny and informative. You cannot take pictures inside, but they will take a picture of you in the close itself. The picture it’s then expensive to buy, but a nice memory.
